The PT-109 patrol torpedo boat entered service in 1942 in the Pacific. On August 2, 1943, the Japanese destroyer Amagiri rammed PT-109, causing her to sink. In a crisis situation, the unit's commander, the future President of the United States John F. Kennedy, managed to save the entire crew, which made him a war hero.
