History of the Legendary Fighter

The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter built at the Supermarine plant in Southampton, England. One of the most famous combat aircraft used during World War II, on which Poles also fought.

Innovations and Technical Changes

From the spring of 1943, new versions of the Merlin engine began to be installed on the Mk IX, such as the Merlin 63, 66 and 70. These innovations allowed for an increase in power for 5 minutes by increasing the engine boost, which could, for example, enable separation from the enemy. A total of 1,255 machines of this variant were built, with the Merlin 66 engine as the LF.IXC (the most frequently produced variant, 4,010 machines), and with the Merlin 70 engine, optimized for high-altitude operations, as the HF.IXC (410 pieces). All IX version machines produced at that time had a C-type wing with 2 20 mm and 4 km 7.7 mm cannons.

Polish Unit - "Scalski's Circus"

The Polish Fighting Team, also known as "Skalki's Circus", took part in combat in the North African campaign in 1943 during World War II. During the ongoing fighting in North Africa in January 1943, the German 5th Panzer Army pushed the Allied troops in central Tunis westward, and under their cover, German and Italian troops withdrew from Tripolitania. The Allies reorganized their troops, and General Harold Alexander became the commander. The Axis command intended to defeat the Allies in central Tunis.

Facing the impending Allied invasion in France, there was a need to gain experience of cooperation between ground forces and air forces. North Africa was the only theater of operations where it was possible to test the cooperation of land forces and air forces in a future operation. After consultations, the English command chose Polish pilots to perform this task because the Poles fought on a better version of Spitfire fighters compared to RAF squadrons and had extensive fighter experience.
