Messerschmitt Bf 109 – German Fighter Plane
The prototype of the Bf 109 fighter was an aircraft developed for Romania under the name M37. During further work, the plane was called Bf 108 and was produced under this name. The Bf 108 Taifun was a two-seat communications aircraft. In 1933, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium placed an order for a new fighter aircraft. Design work, in which Willy Messerschmitt, Robert Lusser and Hubert and Richard Bauer participated, began in the spring of 1934. The construction of the first prototype of the new aircraft, designated V1 (V for Versuchsmuster: experimental aircraft), began in the fall of 1934. Flight tests with locked retractable landing gear began in May 1935. The first prototype used the English Rolls-Royce Kestrel V12 engine with a take-off power of 695 HP (511 kW), driving a two-bladed, wooden, fixed-pitch propeller.
A Legend is Born
The four largest German aviation design offices took part in the competition for a fighter plane announced at that time: Arado, Focke-Wulf, Heinkel and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. The office structures of the last two plants qualified for further development: He 112 and Bf 109. During comparative tests of both prototypes, the Bf 109 achieved a maximum speed that was 22 kilometers higher and a higher rate of climb. However, the He 112 gained very favorable opinions from pilots, who praised the comfortable cabin with very good visibility, good handling of the aircraft while taxiing, and better maneuverability and piloting properties. Initially, the tender was decided in favor of the Heinkel team, but the intrigues and cunning of Prof. Willy Messerschmitt decided to continue work on the Bf 109 prototype. Later, the Messerschmitt AG plant merged with Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. In total, approximately 33,000 Bf 109 versions of various versions were produced.
