Messerschmitt Bf-109: Legendary German Fighter of World War II
Messerschmitt Bf-109 is a German, single-engine fighter aircraft with a metal structure, a low-wing design with a classic tail.
It turned out to be the basic and most frequently produced Luftwaffe fighter during World War II. The prototype first flew on May 29, 1935, and serial production lasted from 1936 to 1945. In total, it is estimated that approximately 35,000 Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighters of all varieties were produced, many of which were delivered to the Czech and Israeli air forces after the war.
History and Development
The roots of the Bf-109 date back to the competition announced in 1933 by the Luftwaffe for a new fighter aircraft. In the competition with the He-112, the Bf-109 project initially lost, but thanks to the intrigues of Willie Messerschmitt, the project could be continued and ultimately it turned out to be the winner of the competition, becoming the basic fighter of the Luftwaffe.
Version Diversity
During production, several main variants of the Bf-109 aircraft were created:
- Bf-109B (Berta): First pre-production series with Junkers Jumo 210 (A or Da) engines. Tested in Spain since 1937.
- Bf-109C (Cezar): Different engine and extensive armament consisting of two 20mm cannons and two 7.92mm guns.
- Bf-109D (Dora): Junkers Jumo 210 Da or Daimler-Benz DB 600 engine. Fought in the September Campaign.
- Bf-109E (Emil): The most famous model with the Daimler-Benz 601A or N engine. It fought in the French campaign, over England, in North Africa and on the Eastern Front.
- Bf-109F (Friedrich): According to German pilots, the most aerodynamically perfect. Changed shape of the fuselage, wings and cabin fairing.
- Bf-109G (Gustav): Most units produced. New 12-cylinder Daimler-Benz DB605A engine. Armament: a pair of 13mm machine guns and a MG151 20mm or MK108 30mm cannon.
- Bf-109K (Kurfirst): Last mass-produced version. Daimler-Benz DB 605DB or DC engine. The fastest version reaching up to 730 km/h.
