North American P-51 Mustang: Legendary Fighter of World War II

History and Construction

The North American P-51 Mustang is an American single-engine fighter designed for the RAF, produced by North American Aviation (NAA) in the United States and, in smaller numbers, by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in Australia. It was used by the US and its allies during World War II and the Korean War as an attack aircraft.

Construction Success

The successful 1940 design meant that the last P-51-based combat aircraft project was completed only in 1986, ending 46 years of development of one design. Currently, many of these machines are in private hands, flying during shows and sports competitions. In total, 15-16 thousand were produced. mustangs.

P-51B Mustang: Breakthrough Model

Based on the XP-51B prototype, the P-51B-1NA series of 400 machines was created. The P-51B-5NA series consisted of 800 pieces and differed in an additional fuel tank with a capacity of 321 liters located behind the pilot's seat and the removal of the reflector from the right wing. The next series, P-51B-10NA, numbered 400 pieces, increasing the bomb load to 907 kg. In this series, three signal lamps were also installed at the end of the left wing.

Cameras and Aerial Photography

71 P-51B-10NA machines were converted with the addition of K 24 cameras for vertical down and oblique photography from an altitude of 3,050 m or one K 17 or K 22 camera for vertical photography from an altitude of 9,140 m. These machines were designated F-6C- 10NA.

Engines and Modifications

Airplanes of all the above-mentioned series are equipped with the Packard V-1650-3 engine. Two P-51B-10NAs remained at Inglewood for the NA-106 project. The P-51B-15NA series aircraft are equipped with more powerful Packard V-1650-7 engines. The positioning of the position lights on the wingtips has also been changed. Malcolm Hood fairings were installed on many P-51B aircraft based in the UK.

Post-War Modifications

After World War II, a small number of P-51B machines of various series had the fuel tank behind the cabin removed, creating two-seat TP-51B training machines. Under Lend-Lease, the British received 25 pieces of the B-1NA series, one B-5NA series, 250 pieces of B-10NA and 34 pieces of B-15NA. All machines were designated Mustang Mk. III. The USAF designated the P-51B as F-51B, the F-6C as RF-51B and the TP-51B as TF-51B.
