Focke-Wulf Fw 190 – Legendary German Fighter
History and Technical Background
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 is a single-seat, single-engine German fighter from World War II. Produced in over 20,000 units, including approximately 6,000 in the fighter-bomber version.
At the end of 1937, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) sent a specification to several plants for a new fighter that would enter service, alongside the Bf 109, and provide security in the event that planes from other countries turned out to be better than the Bf 109 .
The designers of the Focke-Wulf plant under the supervision of prof. Kurt Tank and engineer Rudolf Blaser worked on several fighter designs, most of them with inline engines. Among them was also the design of a rather small fighter with a compact design with an 18-cylinder, air-cooled BMW 139 radial engine. At that time in Germany, the radial engine was not considered a suitable drive for aircraft, especially fighters. But the failure of the Heinkel He 100 and He 112 fighter design, and predictions that inline engine plants would not be able to produce sufficient numbers of these engines, resulted in this design being ordered and development commenced. It was also noted that quite successful designs of fighters with radial engines were created abroad. The direct development of the Fw 190 was handled by a team led by engineer Rudolf Blaser.
Breakthrough Innovations
With the introduction of the North American P-51 Mustang aircraft into service at the turn of 1943 and 1944, American pilots gained a speed advantage over the Fw 190. This prompted German designers to conduct tests with the new, liquid-cooled Jumo 213 A engine with a power of 1,287 kW (1,750 HP), which with the MW-50 installation could reach up to 1,545 kW (2,100 HP). In order to improve the position of the center of gravity, a 50 cm long segment was added in front of the tail section. A circular oil and coolant cooler is placed in front of the engine. Initially, the new version was also supposed to be a high-altitude fighter, but then it was transformed into a basic fighter. The new variant was called Dora (or D).
Models and Production
Fw 190 D-9 was transferred to the line of approximately 700 aircraft. Production was greater, but some of the planes were destroyed by Allied air raids. This version was based on the A-8 airframe, therefore there were no other versions between it and the D-2. Tests with prototypes lasted from May to August 1944, and serial production began in August 1944. The Jumo 213 A-1 engine was used for propulsion, the length of the fuselage was increased to 10.91 m. The armament consisted of two MG 131 machine guns above the engine and two MG 151/20E cannon at the base of the wings. The plane could also carry a bomb or an additional fuel tank on the ETC 504 under-fuselage launcher.
