Historical Collection WWII ship HMS Belfast IWM 4844
HMS Belfast is a light cruiser of the British Royal Navy from World War II. Entered service on August 5, 1939. At the end of November of the same year, as a result of damage by a German mine, it was excluded from service for three years. From 1942, it protected Arctic convoys. On December 26, 1943, together with the cruisers HMS Norfolk and HMS Sheffield, she repelled the attacks of the German battleship Scharnhorst, which tried to break through to the Allied convoy. The arrest of Scharnhorst contributed to its subsequent capture and subsequent sinking. HMS Belfast also took part in the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. From June 1944, it underwent general renovation. In August 1945, she entered the port of Sydney, where she found the end of the war in the Pacific. In the years 1945-1962, with breaks for renovations, he served in the Far East, among others. participation in the Korean War. In 1966 it was designated as a residential hulk. In 1971 it was in danger of being scrapped. Thanks to the active attitude of the British public, this did not happen. It was anchored on the Thames and became a museum vessel. Subsequent renovations extend its service life.
